Italy completes their dominant volleyball run with gold medal at Paris 2024 Olympics against team USA
In straight sets against team USA coming off a successful tournament for the program, Italy reminded the world why they are the number one seed. Defeating USA, Turkey, and overall dropping only a single set in the entire tournament Italy’s run at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games has been remarkably dominant. Team USA never was able to make a sure footing in the match as Italy’s defensive system rendered the hitting of Annie Drews, Jordan Thompson, and others inert with digs and blocks that were some of the most spectacular of the tournament.
While team USA lost, overall this has been a successful tournament for the group that is going through a transitionary period in their history as new talent is emerging in the form of Dana Rettke and Kathryn Plummer and the old guard stalwarts of Annie Drews and Kelsey Robinson-Cook eye this as potentially their last Olympic run. For Italy this being their first ever women’s volleyball gold medal it opens the door to a potentially dominant run over the next quad leading to the 2028 LA Games.
